Using a Routine, you can switch everything in your house off at the same time by telling Alexa that you’re leaving the house, or turn everything that you want on again by telling Alexa that you’re back. While you can individually control any device that’s connected to your home smart network, using Routines can cut out a lot of extra hassle, as well as do specific actions at certain times of the day. Simply put, a routine is a set of instructions for turning on or off devices via Alexa that you can activate with a single voice command. Not so, however, as you can also set up a variety of routines and schedules to improve the ease and quality of your home life, and even make your house and belongings safer. Powered by their Alexa AI assistant, these plugs on the surface seem fairly simple, as they essentially enable you to turn whatever’s plugged into them on and off.

There’s no tracking of energy consumption on offer, either.Amazon’s Smart Plugs are a relatively new addition to this growing, interconnected world. Control your devices whether youre at home or out and about. Such features can be found on TP-Link plugs such as the KP105. This is a better way to help simulate occupancy when you’re not at home, rather than relying on a schedule. While we were able to set schedules for the smart plug to switch on and off at set times, we were disappointed to find there’s no Away mode that switches the plug on or off at random times. During testing, we found the plug switched on and off instantly when controlled by the app or Alexa, and the ‘click’ it made when switching on and off was reassuring.

Once connected to an outlet, we opened the Alexa app, which took on all the hard work – identifying the plug and, once we scanned a QR code on the quick-start guide, connecting it to our home Wi-Fi. The Amazon Smart Plug is an extremely simple smart home device to set up. Unfortunately, there’s no Wi-Fi indicator that alerts you to any connectivity issues. The smart plug only works on the 2.4GHz band, so if you’re installing it in a different room to your router, you may suffer connection problems.

On the left-hand side you’ll find a manual power button. It's not quite as small as the Geeni Spot, but it's small enough that it won't block access to the second plug of. The front of the smart plug features a single socket and a tiny blue LED, which illuminates when the plug is switched on and flashes when the plug is in set-up mode. The Amazon Smart Plug is rectangular and measures 1.5 by 3.2 by 2.2 inches (HWD). The UK version measures 3.7 x 2.2 x 2.5 inches / 5.6 x 9.62 x 6.3cm, since vertically aligned outlets aren’t common – they sit horizontally instead.
In the US, the plug measures 3.2 x 1.5 x 2.2 inches /8 x 3.8 x 5.7cm ( w x h x d) to ensure it fits into vertical outlets without blocking access to the lower outlet. The Amazon smart plug, when fused into another outlet allows you to remotely control your devices, your TV in this instance, using the Alexa app on your iPhone. However, the US and UK versions of the plug look slightly different. It’s rectangular in shape, with an all-white finish complete with a subtle Amazon logo. Like most of the best smart plugs, the Amazon Smart Plug sports a fairly inoffensive look.
